On Monday, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a highly critical score of the Republican Obamacare replacement bill, saying it will result in 14 million more uninsured people by 2018.
The bill’s critics have used the CBO score to bolster their case.
House Speaker Paul Ryan used the score to reinforce his own arguments FOR the bill by saying those numbers would be entirely expected given the abolishment of the individual mandate.
“Of course they’re going to say if we stop forcing people to buy something they don’t want to buy they’re not going to buy it,” Ryan told Fox News’ Bret Baier. “That’s why you have these uninsured numbers, which we all expected.”
As for the longer-term outlook, according to Ryan the bill will “lower premiums 10 percent. It stabilizes the market. It’s a $1.2 trillion spending cut, and $883 billion tax cut and $337 billion in deficit reduction. So, this compared to the status quo is far better.”
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) had a different view of the CBO, one as a “corrupt,” “dishonest” entity that was also hugely wrong on Obamacare.
On The First 100 Days, Gingrich layed out his case to host Martha MacCallum, saying he doesn’t believe a single word they print.
“They should abolish the Congressional Budget Office,” Gingrich told MacCallum. “It is corrupt, it is dishonest, it was totally wrong on ObamaCare by huge, huge margins.”
And a man with Gingrich’s experience would know. After all, he “fought the CBO” often in the 1990’s when he helped balance the budget for four years straight.
According to Gingrich, an office that used an Obamacare architect to help score the ACA is “totally dishonest, disgustingly wrong. That whole thing should be abolished.”
