McCain demands Trump produce evidence by Monday that Obama wiretapped him, or …

With “friends” like this…

Sen. John McCain called on President Donald Trump to produce evidence to back up his claim that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower.

Amid reports that House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., sent a letter demanding evidence by Monday to support the president’s claim, McCain echoed the sentiment in an appearance Sunday on CNN’s “State of The Union.”

“President Trump has to provide the American people, not just the Intelligence Committee, but the American people, with evidence that his predecessor, former president of the United States, was guilty of breaking the law,” the Arizona Republican said.

McCain noted that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testified that there was no truth to that allegation, this being the same Clapper who said at a hearing in 2014 the U.S. was not collecting data on millions of Americans, which proved to be false.

“I think the president has one of two choices: either retract or to provide the information that the American people deserve,” he said. “Because, if his predecessor violated the law, President Obama violated the law, we have got a serious issue here, to say the least.”

Host Jake Tapper asked McCain if he was concerned “about the constant barrage of conspiracy theories we keep hearing from the president?”

Making no effort to discount Tapper’s “barrage of conspiracy theories” claim, McCain replied that “the president obviously has a unique style.”

“On an issue such as this, accusing a former president of the United States of doing something which is not only illegal, but just unheard of,” he added, “then that requires corroboration. And I will let the American people be the judge.”
