President Donald Trump might have mended fences with Ohio Gov. John Kasich but now another GOP governor is vowing buck him where it counts.
Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott has vowed to fight the president’s actions on immigration.
“[I]t is increasingly clear that many elements in the orders have the potential to violate the constitutional rights of American citizens, and infringe on states’ rights afforded by the Tenth Amendment,” he said in February surrounded by both Republicans and Democrats promoting a bill to give the state more control of its own immigration policies. “This legislation serves to protect Vermont … against some of these potential violations, and to reassure our communities and citizens of their safety and security here.”
“This bill has been carefully crafted … to confirm Vermont remains compliant with federal law, that we would not be established as a sanctuary state, and to address the needs and recommendations of our law enforcement partners,” he said.
The governor is concerned that President Trump’s vow to “empower” local law enforcement to enforce immigration law might allow the federal government to “commandeer state and local law enforcement assets,” Fox News reported.
Scott is taking a conservative / libertarian approach to his opposition, according to Fox News.
“We are a nation of United States – a constitutional republic made up of individually governed states empowering three equal branches of government to act on our behalf – not one nation-state governed exclusively by a president,” he said as he announced his Civil Rights and Criminal Justice Cabinet on Jan. 30.
The purpose of the cabinet is to review the president’s executive orders on immigration and consists of Scott’s legal counsel, Vermont’s attorney general, a mayor, cabinet secretaries and legislative leaders, Fox News reported.
“It is a state’s rights argument, curiously, but Vermont has been a state known to buck the tide,” University of Vermont political science professor Garrison Nelson told Fox News. “This is one of the most liberal states in the country. So, there is no punishment he will encounter for challenging the president. There is nothing to be gained by going along with the Trump agenda.”
