In June, Princeton’s 2012 class will gather for a “Star Wars” themed reunion party. Attendees will be free to dress as Jedi Knights, bounty hunters, and even (gasp) Ewoks, but no Stormtroopers will be allowed.
Because racism, or something…
Sadly, this isn’t a parody article or even fake news. It’s all too real in today’s hyper-sensitive, politically-correct society.
According to the Washington Times, the rules committee responsible for organizing the five-year “Star Wars” themed class reunion banned Stormtroopers because some graduates complained that the fictional soldiers from a galaxy far far away reminded them too much of Nazi-era German troops.
From an update sent to attendees to RSVP’d to the party:
“A few of our classmates reached out expressing concerns over our choice to use Stormtroopers as our costume inspiration. We have been informed of the origin of this word and its connections to early- to mid-20th century Germany. This is something neither we nor anyone on your Reunion Committee were aware of, but something we take very seriously. Tonight we made the unanimous decision to remove these costumes.”
According to the Daily Caller, a Facebook message from Princeton class of 2012 spokeswoman and former Democratic congressional candidate Lindy Li further clarified their position:
“The Class of 2012’s costumes for an upcoming reunion were changed after a classmate raised concerns about the origin of the term ‘storm trooper,’ The costumes were vetted by over 50 classmates who did not make this connection and never had any intention of referring to the World War II era. Out of an abundance of caution and sensitivity, and in an effort to guarantee all classmates feel comfortable and welcome on campus, we decided to change our design to another character in the Star Wars universe.”
Those who had already ordered the Stormtrooper costumes via the committee were told they would receive an alternate outfit instead.
Here’s a suggestion:
