New poll shows there’s massive Republican support for tax reform

There is massive support for tax reform among President Donald Trump’s key constituency, according to a recent poll from center-right nonprofit advocacy group, the American Action Network.

Republican voters view tax reform as a key issue facing the nation, and show support for the broad principles of tax reform pushed by Congress, the poll reports. Some 75 percent of Republican voters surveyed believe tax reform is a “very important” issue. The vast majority — 85 percent — of those surveyed approve of the broad principles of Congressional Republicans’ tax reform plan.

Voters are primarily concerned the current U.S. tax code is too complicated and that tax rates are too exorbitant, the poll reports.

Trump campaigned on a platform championing tax reform and massive deregulation, agendas echoed in Congress by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady. It comes as little surprise then that Republican voters overwhelmingly view both Trump and Republican leadership in Congress in a positive light. Some 89 percent of those surveyed approve of the job Trump is doing, and 77 percent approve of the performance of Congressional Republicans.

Another poll from Morning Consult and Politico shows the majority of voters believe Trump is coming through on his campaign promises. Some 56 percent of Americans report thinking Trump is keeping the promises he made on the campaign trail. Just over a quarter, or 27 percent, of voters believe the president is not doing what he promised.

The American Action Network poll included survey data from 1,000 likely Republican voters nationwide, and it was conducted from February 18-22. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percent.
