Sen. Rand Paul lambasts John McCain: America is ‘very lucky’ Trump is president and not him

The battle lines have been drawn in the war between President Donald Trump and Sen. John McCain, and Sen. Rand Paul is taking sides.

The Kentucky senator spoke to ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday and said that America was “very lucky” that President Trump is in the Oval Office and not the 2008 Republican nominee McCain.

Paul said McCain’s critiques of the president were due to his personal foreign policy agenda that includes more deployment of the military around the globe.

“Everything that he says about the president is colored by his own personal dispute he’s got running with President Trump, and it should be taken with a grain of salt, because John McCain’s the guy who’s advocated for war everywhere,” he said.

“He would bankrupt the nation. We’re very lucky John McCain’s not in charge because I think we’d be in perpetual war,” Paul added.

Last week McCain took more than one swipe at the president.

In Munich the Arizona senator pushed his more involved global policy while shredding President Trump’s more non-interventionist strategy, though he didn’t mention the president by name.

And on Sunday’s “Meet The Press” he contended that the way President Trump treats the press “is how dictators get started.”

Paul found that statement preposterous, stating that the president has introduced no legislation and made no moves to curb freedom of the press.

“I would say John McCain’s been wrong on just about everything over the last four decades. He advocated for the Iraq War, which I think destabilized the Middle East,” Paul.

“If you look at the map, there’s probably at least six different countries where John McCain has advocated for us having boots on the ground,” he added.
