Fresh off a tongue lashing of epic proportions Thursday from President Donald Trump over a level of dishonesty that is “out of control,” a ranking member of the media tried out a new motto.
The day after Trump told the mainstream media to its face “the public doesn’t believe you people anymore,” The Washington Post demo’d “a bleak new motto” on Snapchat, according to Fortune senior writer Mathew Ingram.
The new catchphrase read: “Democracy Dies in Darkness.”

Ingram gave a hat tip to CNN’s Brian Stetler, who characterized the motto as a “new ‘value statement'” for The Post:

The president followed up Thursday’s performance with a tweet on Friday saying the news media “is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!”

The reaction to the newspaper’s motto was equally epic, beginning with a tweet that sarcastically suggested it was in response to Trump’s tweet:

Here’s a sampling of addition responses from Twitter:
@mathewi @xeni @brianstelter Is that a motto, or just reporting of what happened this week?

@mathewi, but mushrooms can grow there with all the shit we’re being feed by @brianstelter and other biased journalists.

@brianstelter Whether they have been using it internally or not, it sounds like a slogan WaPo has embraced for this time & those readers.

@brianstelter So you’re saying Democracy was dead for the last 8 years?

@brianstelter
WaPost has had several fake news stories over the past few weeks. Horrible recent track record. Why not mention that Brian?— Rogue CNN Staff (@ShillForHillary) February 18, 2017
