Imagine the stress, heartache, and financial burden of being diagnosed with cancer only to find out that the doctor who diagnosed you was actually only doing it to make a few extra bucks off Medicare.
That’s exactly what one Florida doctor stands accused of, and so far not only has he NOT in jail, he’s still licensed to practice!
According to WPTV, Dr. Gary Marder of Port St. Lucie, Florida has made a deal with federal prosecutors to pay back over $18 million for charging Medicare for patients who weren’t actually sick.
The whole scheme came apart with one patient, Gloria Strumalo, went to Dr. Ted Schiff for a second opinion. She had undergone 20 days of two-hour radiation treatments, each costing between $1,600 and $3,500, and a surgery that gave her an infection before consulting with Schiff, who then contacted authorities.
Turns out, Strumalo wasn’t Dr. Schiff’s first patient from Dr. Marder.
“Sometimes we recognize patients just by the sheer number of biopsies done,” Schiff told WPTV. “By the number of procedures and the excessive use of radiation therapy done in an improper manner.”
“In all my years in the medical field I’ve never seen anything like this,” Schiff said. “As doctors we take an oath to do no harm.”
The agreement states that if the dermatologist pays $5.2 million by February 24, he can avoid paying the $18 million. He’ll also have to fork over a vacant lot he owns valued at $650,000, but he can keep his $28 million 12,700-square-foot home since it can’t be legally seized, according to WPTV.
And to add insult to injury, of Thursday Marder’s medical license was still active even though this isn’t the first disciplinary action against him.
