Apparently, having sex with students doesn’t always require an offender to register as a sex offender in Texas.
As long as the victims are the legal age of consent.
Haeli Wey, an Austin teacher arrested in October 2015 for trysts with not one, but two 17-year-old male students, pleaded guilty Friday to two felony counts of having sexual relationships with both victims, but her sentence won’t include having to register as a sex offender, according to CBS News.
Although Texas law does prohibit sexual relationships with students, the legal age-of-consent in the state is 17.
According to court documents, one of the relationships sparked when Wey joined his on a trip to Africa.
“The victim said while in Africa his relationship with Ms. Wey become more personal and on a deeper level. The victim stated while in Africa their relationship became physical,” the investigator wrote.
The student told investigators he slept with the then-28-year-old math teacher more than 10 times, but when he heard she had gone on a hike with the other victim the relationship ended.
The second victim related social media conversations he had been asked by Wey to delete. When school administrators were made aware of text messages between Wey and the victim by another student, the school contacted the student’s parents.
Sentencing is set for March 10.
