Feds head to Chicago to form task force, officials deny it’s related to Trump tweet

It appears President Trump is making good on his promise to “send the feds” into crime-ridden Chicago.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wants to send 20 more agents into Chicago to add to the 40 that are currently in the Windy City, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to CNN.

The new agents will form what is to be called the “Chicago Crime Guns Strike Force,” CNN reported.

An official denied that the move was in response to President Trump’s tweet a week ago and that the move had been in the works for a while.

But another official that spoke with CNN on Friday said they were not able to rule out the president’s tweet as the reason behind the action.

Later in the day, another spokesperson said the agency had not spoken to the president about strategies in the city.

“ATF is exploring various options as we are committed to furthering law enforcement efforts in Chicago,” the ATF spokesperson told CNN. “One of those options is to send additional agents to Chicago on permanent transfers. ATF is still early in the process of developing strategies and will be prepared to discuss these options further once plans are finalized.”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel welcomed the news in a statement.

“We have received no word from the federal government to confirm these reports, but it would be welcome news if the administration has indeed agreed to one of Mayor Emanuel’s requests for federal resources,” the statement read.

“We remain hopeful that they will also provide added DEA and FBI agents, that they will boost the prosecution rate for federal gun crimes in Chicago and that they will provide funding for successful violence prevention efforts.”

The officials said a bulletin was sent to its field offices nationwide to solicit agents to transfer to the city.
