Just as he did with the Ford Motor Company, Donald Trump let General Motors know in no uncertain terms that producing cars in foreign countries and shipping them back to the United States will come with a cost.
GM makes the Chevrolet Cruze in Lordstown, Ohio, but builds the hatchback model in Mexico.
“GM builds the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback for global markets in Mexico, with a small number sold in the U.S.,” the company said in a statement, according to Fox News.
With an emphasis on U.S. jobs, Trump took to Twitter to let GM know they can expect to pay a “big border tax” for that decision.
“General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to U.S. car dealers-tax free across border. Make in U.S.A. or pay big border tax!” Trump tweeted.
Ford eventually struck a deal with Trump, agreeing not to move production of the Lincoln MKC to Mexico, as the company had originally planned.
Conservative firebrand Laura Ingraham appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday to say expect more of the same from Trump.
“I think Team Trump is examining the options here for companies who have been pulling this type of trick for some time.
Ingraham said this should be a theme in the days leading up to the inauguration, as well as afterwards.
“It roils people on the inside,” she said of companies that manufacture products abroad and receive a tax break in the process.
