With a $1 million bond due on Monday, the Green Party dropped its court case late Saturday looking to force a recount of Pennsylvania’s Nov. 8 election results.
Court documents submitted insist the political party is made up of people who “are regular citizens of ordinary means” and cannot afford the $1 million bond, The Associated Press reported.
“The judge’s outrageous demand that voters pay such an exorbitant figure is a shameful, unacceptable barrier to democratic participation,” said Green Party candidate Jill Stein. “This is yet another sign that Pennsylvania’s antiquated election law is stacked against voters.”
Pennsylvania was part of a recount trifecta from Stein, who is also seeking recounts in Wisconsin and Michigan.
Stein raised more than $4 million toward the recount effort in just over 24 hours at the end of November and as of Wednesday, her website indicated she had raised a total of $6.7 million toward a stated goal of $9.5 million. The total collected is almost double the amount she raised during her failed presidential campaign.
Nonetheless, Stein wasn’t about to cut into her windfall.
“By demanding a $1 million bond from voters yesterday, the court made clear it has no interest in giving a fair hearing to these voters’ legitimate concerns over the accuracy, security and fairness of an election tainted by suspicion,” she said. “No voter in America should be forced to pay thousands of dollars to know if her or his vote was counted.”
Stein let it be known that their efforts — fruitless as they may prove to be — will continue.
“Still, the recount continues and we will fight to ensure the civil and voting rights of all citizens are protected,” she said. “We look forward to announcing our next step on Monday and we will pursue every available remedy to ensure Pennsylvanians can trust what happened in this election.”
