Former Vice President Dick Cheney had to apologize after breaking the news to CNN and the rest of the media that President-elect Donald Trump’s use of social media means America is no longer dependent on the media for information.
Appearing at the Reagan National Defense Forum, along with former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Cheney was asked if he was concerned about Trump’s “casual” language of tweets.
“I do think you need to be careful, but he’ll learn as he goes along,” Cheney told CNN’s Barbara Starr, who was moderating the event.
He mitigated concerns some have about a Trump presidency, saying he “is putting some brains and good people with him […] and is taking very, very seriously the job that he has gotten now.”
But Cheney saw Trump’s use of Twitter as “a way around the press.”
“I think one of the reasons people get so concerned about the tweets is it’s sort of a way around the press,” he said. “It’s modern era, modern technology. He’s at the point where we don’t need you guys anymore.”
“I apologize,” Cheney told Starr, as the audience laughed.
