While there’s no love lost between Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and President Barack Obama, Duterte is singing a far different tune in response to President-elect Donald Trump.
Duterte infamously called Obama a “son of a b*tch” in September, prompting the White House to cancel planned bilateral talks between the two leaders, but his tone was far less hostile when he called Trump on Friday to congratulate him.
The Philippines president said afterward Trump wished his deadly crackdown on illegal drugs success, according to Fox News — that being a stark contrast to Obama, who planned to confront Duterte over his treatment of drug dealers.

An aide to Duterte said the two men had a “very engaging, animated conversation,” with both extending invitations to the other to visit his country, Fox News reported.
Duterte said in a statement that Trump “was wishing me success in my campaign against the drug problem.”
“He understood the way we are handling it and I said that there’s nothing wrong in protecting a country,” Duterte said. “It was a bit very encouraging in the sense that I supposed that what he really wanted to say was that we would be the last to interfere in the affairs of your own country.”
“He said that … well, we are doing it as a sovereign nation, the right way,” Duterte added.
