A heartbreaking tale of a dog being abandoned by its owners came to a happy conclusion when it was announced the pooch would have a new beginning.
The saga began Tuesday when an employee of Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control posted a video of a dog in its custody overcome with glee at the sight of its owners walking into the shelter, she thought, to take her home.
But that was not the case.
The owners had actually come to get a new dog and leave their faithful friend at the shelter.
“Doing Dog Intros we got interrupted by a distracted and overly excited Zuzu,” the employee, Desi Lara, wrote.
“With her fast wagging tail seeing her owners Zuzu lite up like a Christmas Tree. She looked like the happiest dog. Yeah, she’s going home.
“But No. Talking to her owners they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog.”
The dog, who was given the name Zuzu by animal control workers, had been crying over the death of its father and escaped into a neighbor’s yard, who called animal control to come get the dog.
When the family arrived at the facility it told the workers that it had decided to leave her there because “she wasn’t a happy dog anymore.”
“Their solutions for her unhappiness was just leaving her here! And go get another dog,” Lara wrote.
Lara later updated the post to give the good news that there would be a happy ending for Zuzu after all.
“We would like to report the happy ending that a rescue has agreed to take Zuzu and she will be leaving Downey on Friday, which is the first day that she is legally allowed to be adopted,” she wrote.
That was after the owners were roundly attacked on Facebook.
