Obama’s REAL legacy: Record number of Americans say the country is more divided than ever

With President Barack Obama‘s days in the White House coming to an end, a starry-eyed media begins the all-important task of preserving his legacy, but if they were to be honest — we can still dream — that legacy would center around the reality that, under Obama’s tutelage, America became a very divided country.

…more divided than ever, according to a record number of Americans.

A brand new Gallup survey shows a record high 77 percent of Americans perceive the U.S. as a divided country compared to those who believe we are united. Americans have long seen the country as divided, but the gap grew considerably during Obama’s 8 years in office.

More from Gallup:

PRINCETON, N.J. — Seventy-seven percent of Americans, a new high, believe the nation is divided on the most important values, while 21% believe it is united and in agreement. Over the past 20+ years, the public has tended to perceive the nation as being more divided than united, apart from two surveys conducted shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The latest poll was conducted Nov. 9-13 after a contentious presidential campaign involving the two of the least popular candidates in postwar U.S. history, and as protests erupted nationwide in response to Donald Trump’s victory.

With President-elect Donald Trump set to take the reins, Americans appear to have more confidence in him bringing the country together — at least, in comparison to Obama.
