South Carolina Republican Gov. Nikki Haley said Friday that Donald Trump won last week because he ran against both political parties and called on the Republican Party to learn from the outcome.
Speaking at the Federalist Society’s National Lawyers Convention in Washington, Haley also said the GOP must be a party for “all citizens, regardless of their race, gender or where they are born and raised.”
Among those reportedly being considered for secretary of state, Haley did not shy away from criticizing her party.
“If we as Republicans are going to lead effectively and have staying power as the governing party, we must accept that Donald Trump’s election was not an affirmation of the way Republicans have conducted themselves,” she said.
“The President-elect deserves tremendous credit for the way he was able to connect with the electorate,” Haley continued. “But he did not do it by celebrating the Republican Party, and the American people did not vote for him because he had an R next to his name.”
“He ran against both parties, against the political system at large, a system he argued was fundamentally broken, a notion voters subscribed to in massive numbers,” Haley added. “They have rejected the political class of all stripes, Republicans included, and we have no one to blame but ourselves.”
Pointing to “broken promises,” she said the GOP needs “to go back to the basics and remember that we are the party of limited government … the party of inclusivity.”
