It’s currently passé among Democratic circles to blame James Comey for Hillary Clinton’s historic defeat, but Bernie Sanders is having none of it.
The Democratic nominee runner-up criticized Clinton for lashing out at Comey, who announced the FBI renewed probe of her email server just 11 days before the election.
“That’s a minor look [issue],” Sanders told CBS’s Charlie Rose on Sunday.
Bernie expounded on the theme that Clinton didn’t lose merely because of Comey’s revelation.
“It’s not a question of what happens in the last week. The question is that she should have won this election by 10 percentage points.”
Nine days later, of course, Comey announced that Hillary was again in the clear, but many felt the damage had already been done.
According to Sanders, the Democratic Party failed to connect with non-college-educated white working-class voters, the voters that eventually broke the big blue wall for Trump in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
“I will tell you I think there needs to be a profound change in the way the Democratic Party does business. It is not good enough to have a liberal elite,” said Sanders. “I come from the white working class and I am deeply humiliated that the Democratic Party cannot talk to the people from where I came from.”
Could Sanders himself have beaten Trump?
“Hindsight is great, Charlie. I don’t know the answer to that — maybe, maybe not,” the Vermont senator said. “But this is what I do know: I know that the Democratic Party has got to stand with the working people of this country — feel their pain and take on the billionaire class, take on Wall Street, take on the drug companies.”
