Former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis called for Democrats to fight the electoral college system Saturday, according to a report from Politico.
“Hillary won this election, and when the votes are all counted, by what will likely be more than a million votes,” Dukakis, who lost the 1988 presidential election, wrote in a private memo to Politico. “So how come she isn’t going to the White House in January? Because of an anachronistic Electoral College system which should have been abolished 150 years ago.”
“That should be at the top of the Democratic priority list while we wait to see what a Trump administration has in store for us. So far, all we know is that dozens of lobbyists are all over the Trump transition — a strange way to drain the swamp.”
Trump’s transition team currently has a mandate from President-elect Trump to institute a rule requiring members from lobbying for an industry they are working on.
Dukakis lost to President George H. W. Bush in the 1988 presidential election by over 7 million votes. Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton joins former Vice President Al Gore as Democrats who won the popular vote, but lost in the electoral college.
Dukakis joins former Attorney General Eric Holder in speaking out against the constitutionally enshrined method for electing presidents. Some Democrats and progressives went so far as labeling the institution “racist,” saying it’s a tool that southern states used to maintain control over the Union in the days of slavery.
