What was said between Trump and Clinton at the Al Smith dinner? Cardinal Dolan tells all

Cardinal Timothy Dolan sat between bitter rivals Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton at the Al Smith dinner on Thursday night in what he called the “iciest place on Earth.”

But there was a moment of thawing when the two presidential candidates spoke to each other before they were introduced.

“I was very moved by the obvious attempt by both Secretary Clinton and Mr. Trump to try to get along, to say nice things privately to one another,” Dolan told the “Today” show on Friday. “I was very moved by that — that was pleasant.”

Dolan said he got the two to pray together and, afterwards, Trump leaned across him and spoke directly to Clinton.

“‘You know, you are one tough and talented woman.’ ” Dolan recalled Trump said. “‘This has been a good experience. This whole campaign, as tough as it’s been.’”

“And [Hillary] said to him, ‘Donald, whatever happens, we need to work together afterwards,’ ” Doland told hosts Savannah Guthrie and Lester Holt.

The kind moment was a departure from the pointed comments the two made during remarks at the dinner that saw the crowd boo Trump.

Doland said he was in a similar situation four years ago when he sat between Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama.

“Four years earlier I was with Gov. Romney and President Obama, and you could tell there was some iciness,” Dolan said. “The purpose of the evening is to break some of that ice, and thanks be to God, it works.”
