The Clinton campaign wants Monday’s debate moderator, Lester Holt, to put his thumb on the scale for the Democrat presidential nominee.
“All that we’re asking is that if Donald Trump lies, that it’s pointed out,” Robby Mook, Clinton’s campaign manager, told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday.
Mook dubbed the debate a “special circumstance” in calling for Holt to play fact checker.
“It’s unfair to ask for Hillary both to play traffic cop while with Trump, make sure that his lies are corrected, and also to present her vision for what she wants to do for the American people,” he said.
“We’re saying this is a special circumstance, a special debate, and Hillary should be given some time to actually talk about what she wants to do to make a difference in people’s lives. She shouldn’t have to spend the whole debate correcting the record,” Mook added.
The executive director of the Commission on Presidential Debates, Janet Brown, told CNN it is not the moderator’s job to act as fact checker.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea to get the moderator into essentially serving as the Encyclopedia Britannica,” she told CNN’s “Reliable Sources” on Sunday.
