In face of riots, police claim to have proof Keith Scott was armed with gun when shot

Before a second night of violent rioting broke out in his city, Charlotte Police Chief Kerr Putney went before the public to say the black man shot and killed by one of his officers, 43-year-old Keith Lamont Scott, was armed despite a claim making the rounds on social media that Scott has simply holding a book.

WSOC-TV reported there is a dash camera video that backs up the claim, showing Scott getting out of a car and coming at police officers with a gun in his hand.

Putney identified Officer Brentley Vinson as the cop who shot Scott, and said the officer, also an African-American, fired because Scott posed a threat, according to CNN.

The notion that Scott was holding a book began when his daughter, Lyric Scott, posted a Facebook Live recording moments after the shooting claiming her father was shot because he was reading a book, the cable news network reported.

“They shot my daddy ’cause he’s black,” she said. “He was sitting in his car reading a motherf**king book. So they shot him. That’s what happened.”

Putney said Wednesday that while a gun was found at the scene, no book was found.

“I can tell you a weapon was seized, a handgun. I can also tell you, we did not find a book, that has been made reference too,” said Putney. “I can just tell you what I know based on what we’ve gathered through the scientific process of going through the evidence.

Police were at the location looking for a different person with an outstanding warrant when Scott was seen with a handgun. Putney said Officer Vinson was in plain clothes but had a police department vest on and was with several uniformed officers.

Putney said the three uniformed officers had body cameras on them, although Vinson did not. The police chief also confirmed that there is dash cam footage available and investigators are examining the video, according to CNN.

The NAACP released a statement asking Charlotte officials to release the video of the shooting.
