Controversial film maker Oliver Stone talked to Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly Thursday night about his new film “Snowden.”
O’Reilly started the interview by asking Stone if he thought the U.S. was a “noble” country.
A good question because Stone is a 9/11 “truther” and has produced films like “JFK,” “Nixon” and “W” that don’t paint the most flattering portrait of America.
“Yes, in its intentions,” he said. “I admire its history, much of it — and I grew up here.”
Stone acquiesced to O’Reilly’s assessment that he is far to the left politically but said it doesn’t influence his movies.
“I stay away from the politics. I really try to stick to my role as a dramatist,” he said. “I’m not trying to lead you. I’m trying to lay out a story that happened from 2004 to 2013.”
He added that Edward Snowden, the subject of his film and the man who leaked government spying secrets, was angered that President Obama kept many of the Bush Administration’s surveillance programs.
“[Obama] doubled down on the Bush Administration’s surveillance and other forms of warfare that they created,” Stone said.
O’Reilly countered y asking if it was possible that both president’s were far more versed in the threats that face America than a low-level government employee not privy to their intelligence briefings.
“No, I believe governments lie,” Stone said. “I think that they protect their own interests to get re-elected.”
How conducting surveillance to prevent terrorist attacks gets officials reelected, Stone didn’t say.
