Donald Trump has been saying it for months – walls work – and one European nation is about to give one a shot.
Britain’s new immigration minister, Robert Goodwill, has officially confirmed the impending construction of a £2 million ($2.6 million) “big, new wall” to stop the movement of refugees and migrants from Calais across the English Channel.
On Tuesday, Goodwill told the Commons home affairs committee that the existing fencing isn’t working and needs to be replaced. “People are still getting through … We have done the fences. Now we are doing the wall.”
The plan is to begin construction next month of a 13-foot-tall concrete barrier that will stretch over the half mile approach to the ferry port. To prevent scaling, the wall will be built from smooth concrete. The idea is to try to protect the road from migrants who currently jump on and intercept vehicles on the way to the port.
The wall is being completed as part of a joint £17-million ($22.7-million) project with the French government to ramp up Channel port security.
“We are going to start building this big, new wall as part of the £17 million package we are doing with the French. There is still more to do. We have also invested in space for 200 lorries at Calais so that they have somewhere safe to wait.”
This is obviously a much smaller wall than the one Trump is proposing for America’s southern border. However, as is the case with the large wall between Israel and the West Bank that has been extremely successful in preventing terrorism, whether they are a half mile or hundreds of miles in length, the fact of the matter is, walls work.
