The family of a one-month-old black baby being cared for by a white female police officer is crying foul after a photo emerged of the officer holding the child.
But did the family member’s complaint that the infant was “exploited” say more about her disposition toward police?
After the parents overdosed, Birmingham police officer Michelle Burton took care of the baby and her three siblings for more than six hours, according to NBC affiliate WVTM-TV. The children’s father died and the mother remains in the hospital.

Burton’s husband posted a picture on social media of his wife holding the small child while praising her efforts and that led to the baby’s aunt, Mary Purnell Adalane, complaining at a Birmingham City Council meeting on Tuesday.
“This child has a right, and it’s been violated,” Adalane said. “This police officer exploited this child. No one gave them permission to take that picture.”
“She’s been exploited,” Adalane later told WVTM-TV. “She had no right to take a picture with my niece. She had no right. No one gave her that… and for them to put it on social media.”
The children are now in the custody of the state and Adalane was referred to the city’s legal department.
