It’s all in how folks choose to spin it…
President Barack Obama sat down with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday and spoke of the “long tradition in the United States of inclusion, immigration [and] diversity,” but in the process, Obama oddly mirrored a key point of Republican nominee Donald Trump’s immigration plan.
The president suggested that “people get assimilated” when they immigrate to America — some Muslims are slow to conform to Western cultures, though there is more success in the U.S. than in Europe — when he tied patriotism to one’s beliefs.
“And we benefit from this incredible country in which the measure of your patriotism and how American you are is not the color of your skin, your last name, your faith, but rather your adherence to a creed, your belief in certain principles and values,” Obama said.
Which sounds remarkable similar to one of the points Trump outlined in last week’s big immigration speech.
Speaking in Phoenix, Arizona, Trump called for an “ideological certification to make sure that those we are admitting to our country share our values and love our people.”
It goes without saying that this is in reference to those who believe in honor killings, radical Islam and disrespecting gays and minorities.
But Obama was quick to the issue of immigration to attack Trump, holding fast to his already established views of “bitter” Americans who “cling to guns or religion or antipathy” — see white Christians.
“I think if you look at the current polls, he’s been able to appeal to a certain group of folks who feel left out or worried about the demographic change, social change, who have legitimate concerns around the economy and feeling left behind,” Obama told Zakaria.
