Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton only has a two point lead over Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to a Morning Consult poll published Sunday.
Trump maintained his grip on the 40 percent mark over last week’s Morning Consult poll, and Clinton’s numbers fell from 43 to 42 percent, giving the Democratic nominee a tiny two point lead in the polls. Eighteen percent of likely voters gave no opinion, indicating there is still room for improvement for either candidate.
Thirteen percent of likely voters gave no opinion when Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein were added to the poll. Clinton led with 38 percent, Trump followed with 36 percent, and the third party candidates maintained their averages of 9 and 4 percent respectively.
Clinton solidified support from Hispanic voters, but not by much. Clinton picked up three percent of the vote to earn 61 percent, with Trump holding steady with 21 percent of the Hispanic vote.
National security is no longer the top concern of voters, with 35 percent of likely voters choosing the economy as most important, compared to only 21 percent selecting national security. Third place was senior’s issues, with 14 percent of voters selecting that issue as most important, and health care at 12 percent.
Trump’s border wall split the voters, with 46 percent in favor, and 45 opposed to the idea. Sixty-eight percent of overall voters supported the idea of allowing anyone to enter the country as long as they could support themselves financially.
A majority of voters opted to allow illegal immigrants to stay in the country as long as certain financial criteria were met, and a smaller majority of voters also said they supported Trump’s idea of forcing immigrants to go back to their home countries, and reapply to return to the United States.
The Morning Consult poll was conducted from Sept. 1 through Sept. 2, and included 2,001 registered voters. The poll carried a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
