It took him 10 days to get there, but President Obama did finally make it to Louisiana to look at the devastation wrought by heavy rain that pounded the Baton Rouge area earlier this month.
He didn’t see a lot of water. It was gone. And the people started clean-up operations long before the president arrived.
But Obama was “heartbroken” nonetheless and promised the nation would help those left in the storm’s wake rebuild.
The numbers are staggering, according to the New Orleans Times Picayune.
Gov. John Bel Edwards’ office has estimated 60,646 houses were damaged and 30,000 people rescued; other people escaped on their own. FEMA says 109,398 people or households have applied for housing help, and 25,000 National Flood Insurance Program claims have been filed, the newspaper reported on its NOLA.com website.
“We’re going to help you,” the president said, after touring one hard-hit community in East Baton Rouge Parish, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported. “The reason I can say that with confidence is because that’s what Americans do. I know how resilient the people of Louisiana are and I know that you will rebuild again.”

Many people weren’t buying it, taking to social media to slam Obama and his broken heart.
@CBSNews @POTUS Bullshit. You knowingly chose to selfishly be busy playing golf at the time it all began, to ever be heartbroken. You Liar !

@CBSNews @POTUS Not heartbroken enough to stop golfing, fundraising, and celebrating Bill Clinton’s birthday, however.

Obama is preaching to America like we haven’t already been doing our part to help the people of Louisiana. You’re a week late.
