He cobbled together a cadre of supporters for his 2016 Democratic presidential run, saying no to big money and promising transparency. With him he brought thousands of disaffected voters into the political process.
But was it all for naught?
One has to wonder if Bernie Sanders supporters now #FeeltheBern following news that the Vermont senator, a self-professed socialist, won’t be filing personal finance disclosures with the Federal Elections Commission.
“I guess our campaign just said ‘why bother’,” Sanders’ wife told the Associated Press on Thursday.
The FCC granted Sanders and his campaign two 45-day extension — in mid-May and late June — on filing the reports. After he dropped out of the race, the gracious FCC told him not to worry about those silly little filings.
Richard Skinner, a policy analyst with the Sunlight Foundation, a Washington-based pro-transparency group, said the FEC “may have been a little too generous” with the deadline extensions it allowed for Sanders, according to the Center for Public Integrity, which first reported the story Thursday.
“It sure looks like the Sanders campaign abused this,” Skinner said.
And the story doesn’t stop with all that campaign money from the little people. Nope, it involves his wife, her money, and a lake house off beautiful Lake Champlain.
Jane Sanders told the AP she and her husband paid cash — $575,000 — for the house in North Hero, Vermont.
“She said she sold her share of her family’s long-time vacation home in Bridgton, Maine, to her brother for $150,000, added some money from her retirement account and from an advance her husband got on a book he is writing to come up with the money to buy the couple’s third home,” the AP reported.
The Vermont website Seven Days report in August that “Sanders’ new crib has four bedrooms and 500 feet of Lake Champlain beachfront on the east side of the island — facing Vermont, not New York. The Bern will keep his home in Burlington and use the new camp seasonally.”
The Sanders also have a house in Washington, D.C., of course.
It must be nice to be a Vermont socialist.
