The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is considering whether to declare the historic Gadsden Flag a racist symbol in the workplace.
The Revolutionary War-era flag that includes the famous words “Don’t Tread On Me” became an icon of the tea party movement, which has held President Barack Obama’s feet to the fire since its inception in 2009.
“Whatever historic origins and meaning of the symbol, it also has since been sometimes interpreted to convey racially tinged messages in some contexts,” an EEOC report says in a case of a black government worker complaint against a coworker who wore a Gadsden Flag baseball cap, according to Fox News.
Hence, the Obama administration’s effort to now tread upon the iconic flag.
But social media users were quick to offer up some alternative designs of the flag, including some that may be more acceptable to today’s social justice warriors.
