Donald Trump said he saved Ted Cruz’s hide when he walked in on his speech at the Republican National Convention.
“You know what, he’s lucky I did it,” he told Bloomberg news in an interview published on Saturday. “I walked in and the arena went crazy. Because there’s great unity in the Republican Party and people don’t know it. Had I not walked in, I think that audience would have ripped him off the stage. I think I did him a big favor.”
Trump walked in at the end of Cruz’s speech, after the Texas senator did not endorse him, and drew the attention of the crowd and the television cameras.
Bloomberg News asked Trump if he intentionally did it in order to “tweak” Cruz, his fiercest rival in the Republican presidential primary.
“Tweak him?” he replied. “I would never do a thing like that. But, yes.”
