Libertarian Gary Johnson calls GOP ‘dying party,’ outlines why he’s ‘running against Trump’

Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate for president, lashed out at Republicans, his former party, for nominating Donald Trump as their presidential nominee.

In an op-ed for Politico, Johnson said the GOP “doesn’t even resemble that of the party I once knew,” adding that the selection of Mike Pence as Trump’s vice presidential running mate “only makes matters worse.”

Johnson compared Republicans to the Whigs in the lead up to the Civil War, a dying party, and said Libertarians are ready to take the GOP’s place.

Politico further explained the connection to the Whig Party:

In the period leading up to the Civil War, American politics was dominated by a Democratic Party and the Whig Party. The controversy over slavery split the Whigs, and the party embraced nativism, opposing immigration and members of certain religious faiths.

The Republican Party is on its way to becoming like the Whigs. The Whigs died, then a new party came forward with an inspiring and positive vision for America.

The former governor of New Mexico waxed poetic about his qualifications and accomplishments, and those of his running mate Bill Weld, while making the ridiculous claim that Donald Trump “hasn’t succeeded in business.”

Hardcore Johnson supporters were happy with his message.

Others gave the former governor a dose of reality.
