French revelers mowed down in streets of Nice; at least 84 dead, dozens injured in horrific scene

At least 84 people were killed, and dozens more injured in Nice, France when Bastille Day festivities were rocked by a horrific terror attack.

The attacker drove a truck into a crowd celebrating what is the equivalent of France’s Fourth of July, mowing down revelers until police shot him to death in a gun battle, according to reports.

“A fraction of a second later, an enormous white truck came along at a crazy speed, turning the wheel to mow down the maximum number of people,” Damien Allemand, a journalist for Nice-Matin told Fox News. “I saw bodies flying like bowling pins along its route. Heard noises, cries that I will never forget.”

Witnesses said the driver jumped out of the truck, after driving for about a mile, and began opening fire again while he shouted “Allahu Akbar,” before being shot dead by police.

Two Americans, Sean Copeland, 51, and his son, Brodie, 11,  are reported as being among the dead, according to a statement from the family given to the Austin American-Statesman.

The Nice terrorist rented the lorry two days earlier and had been parked on the street for nearly nine hours and even told police he was delivering ice cream before carrying out his deadly attack, according to reports.

The killer, who was previously known to police for violence and theft, is reported to have had assault rifles, a pistol and even a grenade with him in the lorry – but they went undiscovered.

Despite allegedly questioning the driver, police officers in the southern French city did nothing to move him on as he waited to begin the attack.

Reports claim police allowed the killer to stay on the Promenade des Anglais because he told them he was delivering ice cream.

Although heavy duty lorries are normally banned from the roads during national holidays and Sundays, deliveries are often exempted.
