A Pittsburgh area man and woman who stopped in at a diner were quick to express their disdain for a group of police officers when a server attempted to sit the couple near the cops.
How did the officers respond to the snub? They picked up the man and woman’s tab.
According to Jesse Meyers, a server at Eat N’Park diner in Homestead, when the couple was taken to a nearby table the man made it clear he did not want to sit there, WTAE reported.
Even though one of the officer’s tried to reassure the man.
“It’s okay sir. You won’t have to worry about it, we won’t hurt you,” Officer Chuck Thomas told the man, according to WTAE.
The man responded by giving the officer “a hard look” and walking away.
“Essentially the whole goal of it was to let him know that we’re not here to hurt you, we’re not here for that,” Thomas said. “We’re here for you. We work for the public. And we just want to better the relationship between the community and the police.”
As for picking up the check, he said they hoped to give the man a new perspective on law enforcement.
“It just dawned on me, I should do this real quick just to show this guy look, I don’t know if you had bad experience with the police in the past — you may have, you may have not — but I just want you to know I never had an experience with you and I’m not here to do anything to you. And neither will my partners,” Thomas said.
The officers paid the couple’s $28.50 tab and left the man a message on the receipt: “Sir, your check was paid for by the police officers that you didn’t want to sit next to. Thank you for your support. I left a $10.00 tip too.”
