Thursday night’s ambush in Dallas that cost five officers their lives is part of a disturbing and tragic national trend.
Using data from the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, USA Today reports that police officer shootings in the U.S. are now 44 percent higher than they were this time last year.
According to Nick Breul, the fund’s director of research, the total police firearm deaths now stands at 26 including the five deaths in Dallas, compared with 18 at this point in 2015.
Breul also said that the 11 ambushes so far this year already outpace the eight that happened by this point last year.
“That’s certainly a concern for us. It’s troubling and it’s something that we watch. It’s really an assassination. You’re taking advantage of an officer and you’re ensuring that you’re able to kill them through them either being vulnerable or through a complete surprise attack.”
Meanwhile, in completely unrelated news, BLM protests are trending up too.
