In a Facebook Live interview with CNN’s Van Jones, former Republican speaker Newt Gingrich said it’s difficult for white people to understand the “everyday danger” of being black in America.
In the aftermath of five Dallas cops killed by a black man sympathetic to the violent Black Lives Matter movement, Gingrich argued that “it is more dangerous to be black in America” — black-on-black crime notwithstanding — and said white parents don’t have to teach their kids how to interact with police the way black parents do.
“If you are a normal white American, the truth is you don’t understand being black in America and you instinctively under-estimate the level of discrimination and the level of additional risk,” he said.
Gingrich, who is rumored to be on Donald Trump’s short list as a potential running mate, referenced a lack of respect from police as a driving factor.
“It is more dangerous to be black in America,” he said. “It’s more dangerous in that they are substantially more likely to end up in a situation where the police don’t respect you and you could easily get killed.”
“And sometimes for whites it difficult to appreciate how real that is and how it’s an everyday danger.”
Pointing to “stalled” progress for African-Americans, Gingrich said this “creates the kind of alienation where it begins to become legitimate to think about, whether it’s in songs or slogans or whatever, the shooting of policemen.”
He did acknowledge how dangerous it is to be a police officer today.
“Every time you walk up to a car you could be killed,” Gingrich said. “Every time you go into a building where there’s a robbery you can be killed.”
Interestingly, Gingrich was highly complimentary of the progressive left CNN host. Not only did he describe the former self-avowed radical communist as “a remarkable leader,” but he said it was a “great honor” to be there with Jones.
