A 28-year-old Knoxville, Tennessee school teacher just pleaded guilty to 28 felony counts, including six counts of sexual battery and 22 counts of exploitation of a minor, and yet she won’t be spending a day in prison.
According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Serena Milan, a teacher at Northwest Middle School, pursued a five-month-long affair with her 14-year-old student, engaging in sexual acts in Milan’s classroom at least six times and even meeting at a local mall parking lot to have sex in the car. The English “intervention” instructor actually “coaxed” the boy along by sending him graphic photographs and text messages.
Instead of prison, Milan’s lawyers brokered a deal that includes ten years probation and 20 years on the sex offender registry. This deal was even approved by the victim’s mother in order to shield the boy from having to testify in open court.
A lawsuit filed by the mother claims that a coach and friend of Milan, Sean Green, helped facilitate the affair by bringing the student to Milan’s classroom even though he knew what was going to happen. It also alleges that Green as well as Milan pressured the family to remain silent after the boy’s mother found out.
The lawsuit asks for more than $2 million from the teacher, the coach, and the school district for its history of inaction regarding student sexual abuse as well as the hiring of a teacher who had been disciplined for “inappropriate conduct” in the past.
