Just a few miles away from where teenager Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by George Zimmerman in 2012, the mayor of the Florida city was robbed and car-jacked.
And while it’s unlikely President Barack Obama will follow suit as he did in Martin’s death and weigh in on the crime, if he did, the president could say that if he had a son, he’d look like one of the suspects.
Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett was carjacked at gunpoint around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday outside a friend’s home. Police say three men — at least two of the three were armed — approached Triplett and stole his Mercedes and wallet, NBC affiliate WESH reported.

“Being a victim of a crime is unnerving, yet it was reassuring to witness both speed and diligence from the Sanford Police Department,” the mayor said. “It is disheartening when this type of crime takes place in the City of Sanford.”

Considering Neighborhood Scout rates Sanford as having “one of the highest crime rates in America,” reporting that the “chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 17,” the mayor has plenty to be disheartened about.
Triplett has been mayor of the city since 2010.
Police arrested 18-year-old Jermine Horne and a 17-year-old accomplice after they wrecked Triplett’s Benz while being chased by police. The third suspect remains at large.
