White people are steadily becoming the minority in the United States.
According to new figures released by the Census Department racial and ethnic minorities accounted for 50.2 percent of babies under 1-year-old in 2015.
The data, along with updated numbers from previous years, was released Thursday.
The new figures showed minority births outpaced whites in 2013 by about 1,000 and in 2014 by about 16,000.
According to Census Bureau projections, non-Hispanic whites will cease to be the overall majority in total U.S. population by 2044. Pew research group estimates the shift will occur by 2055.
Several factors account for the shift including the fact that minority groups have more women in their child bearing years than whites and many babies are being born to couples where one partner is white and the other non-white, according to Pew Research.
And rising immigration numbers, both legal and illegal, cannot be discounted.
