A beloved war dog was put to rest on Saturday and a four-generation Marine Corps family said goodbye with a full military send-off.
Rico, a 12-year-old German Shepard who served two tours in Afghanistan, which included 240 missions and at least 30 firefights, was put down after his health had deteriorated too much, according to WOOD-TV.
After being retired from service, Rico was adopted by the family of Marine Sgt. Russ Beckley Jr. — the war dog served alongside the Purple Heart-recipient in the Corps.
Beckley Jr. and his father, dressed in their Marine blues, are seen here carrying Rico’s flag-draped coffin.

“There was not a moment when it wasn’t his mission or his goal to be by my side,” Beckley Jr. told the NBC affiliate. “I was everything to him. And he was everything to me.”
He also said he can imagine the day when he and family are with Rico again.
“I can just imagine one day, seeing my great-grandfather, my grandfather, my father and my mother, standing there with Rico. And we will all be together again,” he said.
