Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Sunday that Muslim communities are under the protection of the Department of Justice.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Lynch discussed the Muslim community in the aftermath of the terror attack at an Orlando nightclub by a radicalized Muslim gunman that claimed the lives of 49 people.

“Those communities are targeted as well. They are often swept up in this,” she said, stressing the need to ensure Muslims are treated fairly.

“And so we want to make sure that every community in the United States knows that they are under our protection.”

Lynch said the Justice Department “investigates these cases aggressively,” adding that “no stone is left un-turned.”

“There is no backing away from an issue; there is no backing away from an interview because of anyone’s background because, for us, the source of information is very, very important,” she said.

The attorney general also said it is “very important for us to maintain our contacts within the Muslim community.”

“Because often, individuals, if they’re from that community and they’re being radicalized, their friends and family members will see it first,” Lynch said. “They will see activity first, and we want that information to come to us.”
