In an interview with the openly anti-Donald Trump Huffington Post, House Speaker Paul Ryan said he hasn’t yet achieved full unity with the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
He added that his endorsement doesn’t provide Trump with “a blank check” to do and say whatever he wants to.
“I don’t know what that line is,” Ryan told the Post, “but right now, I want to make sure that we win the White House.”
The Speaker responded to Trump’s claim that he could ban Muslim immigration without congressional approval, by pointing out that Republicans released part of their agenda on executive overreach on the day the billionaire business mogul made that statement.
“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers,” Ryan warned.
Ryan again dismissed the suggestion that he might try to snatch the Republican presidential nomination from Trump, despite news that some delegates are planning to attempt a coup to do just that.
“I’ve passed on it 2012, I passed on it in 2016. If I was that ambitious, I would have run by now,” he told the Post. “I have presidential-sized policy ambitions, but I’ve really yet to have presidential-sized personal ambitions.”
But he did not rule out running in the future.
“Maybe it’s because the stage and phase in life I am,” Ryan said. “I think that’s really probably it. The reason I have not been as personally ambitious as my policy ambition is, I think is just because the phase of life I’m in, given the stage and age of my family.”
