Brazen hashtag trends after giants like Facebook, Twitter rattle users by signing pledge

Facebook, Microsoft, Twitter and YouTube all signed a pledge Tuesday with the European Commission to stop the spread of “hate speech” — as loosely defined as the term may be.

Giving off a Big Brother-esque vibe, the social media giants have committed to putting a greater effort into tracking down and reporting those who engage in hate speech to authorities, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Considering how delicate social justice warriors are in the Obama age, taking offense to the slightest of provocations, social media users were justifiably nervous about the development — so much so that the hashtag #IStandWithHateSpeech started trending on Twitter late Tuesday.

The reactions were summed up best by one user who said: “If you don’t stand with hate speech you don’t believe in free speech. It really is as simple as that.”

All in all, the responses offer a glimmer of hope that free speech is still revered by Americans… here’s a sampling from Twitter:
