The liberal media has gone wild over a report that American hero Chris Kyle lied about his Navy medal count but there’s more to the story that hasn’t been told.
A report by “The Intercept” on Wednesday claimed that “Chris Kyle distorted his military record” when he claimed in his book, “American Sniper — a story of honor, glory, and quiet heroism,” that he received two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars for valor.
“But Kyle, who was murdered by a fellow military veteran several years after leaving the Navy, embellished his military record, according to internal Navy documents obtained by The Intercept,” the report said.
The Intercept received the information after it submitted a Freedom of Information Act request.
But the information obtained by The Intercept may be lacking.
According to Kyle’s DD214, the form service members get when discharged, Kyle’s record count is correct.
It listed two Bronze Stars and five Silver Stars.
Why the discrepancy?
According to the Navy Times:
Navy Times first learned of this alleged discrepancy in 2014 but was unable to verify whether Kyle had been recognized privately for actions during classified operations — which could have accounted for a second Silver Star.
As USA Today recently revealed, the Navy has awarded more than 100 Silver Stars under such circumstances going back to 9/11. Navy Times obtained those citations, which are redacted and do not include the recipient’s name.
It remains a possibility that Kyle did receive a second award, a Navy official said Wednesday, but there’s no paper trail to support that.
An anonymous source who spoke to The Resurgent said the DD214 is more reliable than the Navy administration records.
The DD214 is not perfect, but trusting the military to provide all documents is like trusting in the tooth fairy to be real.
I would rely on the DD214 more than on the information gathered half-heartedly for a Freedom of Information Act request.
A former special forces operator who spoke to Independent Journal Review disagreed.
The Navy’s records are going to be more accurate than DD214s. The DD214 is produced locally whereas Navy records have multiple filters that they have to go through.
The Silver Star is a big deal. There’s no messing it up — especially at the admin level.
