While the online auction to sell the gun used to kill Trayvon Martin was beset with trolls trying to circumvent the process, George Zimmerman still made out like a bandit.
After the first website pulled the auction wanting no part of it, a second website took it on and the Kel-Tec PF-9 9mm handgun Zimmerman called “a piece of American history” sold to a top bid of more than $120,000, according to TMZ.
“The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin,” he wrote in the item description.
The celebrity news and gossip site reported that the second site, United Gun Group, decided to pull the initial listing due to the fake bids, but added a private email verification to better determine legitimate bidders.
“We’re told roughly 7 verified users participated in the bidding war. Zimmerman has to verify the winner and his or her funds before the sale is finalized. The top bidder is anonymous at this point, due to the auction site’s rules.”
Other sources said the gun sold for $138,000, but TMZ said that was one of then many fake bids.
Zimmerman’s ill-advised decision to sell the gun was just the latest sign of questionable judgement from the former neighborhood watch coordinator since the fateful night he shot and killed 17-year-old Martin.
