Dr. Ben Carson has walked away from the committee searching for Donald Trump‘s running mate.
According to his business manager, Armstrong Williams, the famed neurosurgeon is now being tasked with preparations for Trump’s meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday.
“What Trump wanted from Carson were names of who he would recommend for a potential candidate. He was among several other people making recommendations,” he told The Daily Beast. “Once those names were submitted, they decided to have [Corey] Lewandowski head up [the committee].”
“It’s passed off to him. That vetting process is a long process and a tedious process. Now Carson is involved in making sure that everything goes well with Thursday’s meeting,” he said.
The news followed a report by the Washington Post on Tuesday that said Trump’s campaign manager would be in charge of the vice presidential selection process.
A source told The Beast that Carson would meet with Ryan by phone “ahead of the Trump meeting.”
Williams said Carson remains a “trusted confidant” who will do what is needed of him.
“I do know that Dr. Carson and Trump have become very trusted allies; brothers,” Williams said. “They confide in each other.”
The meeting with Ryan comes after the speaker said he wasn’t yet prepared to support Trump as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee last week.
“Dr. Carson is carrying the weight of this on his shoulders,” he said about Trump’s meeting with Ryan. “Because Trump trusts him and the Speaker trusts him.”
Carson had ruled himself out of being Trump’s running mate last week.
“I’m not interested in doing that for a number of reasons,” Carson said. “I don’t want to be a distraction. I’m sure you remember how crazy the media was about me. It’s too important a time in our life.”
