Not so fast with that apology.
Former Mexican President Vicente Fox changed his tone considerably toward Donald Trump following the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s convincing win in Tuesday’s Indiana primary, even apologizing for disparaging comments he has made about Trump and inviting him to come to Mexico.
But Fox has since followed up on that regret by disparaging Trump supporters as lazy, uneducated, TV watching drunks, the Washington Examiner reported.
In an interview Friday with the Examiner, he said that when it comes to contributions Mexico makes in support of the U.S. economy, Trump supporters still “don’t respect us.”
“We need to wake up that citizen,” Fox said. “We need them to take them away from the TV and drinking beer, to working hard, to getting the skills, to getting knowledge, and they will come along, like everybody else.”
Fox also told the Examiner he spent a half-hour with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at the airport in Mexico City on Sunday and discussed how he can help convince Hispanic voters in the United States to reject Trump, which would all but ensure Hillary Clinton’s success in the 2016 election.
“What I’ve been saying here, I told her,” the former president said. “Count with us, with all Mexicans, to support the Democratic Party because you’ve done much better with us than the Republican Party.”
And there was more name calling, with Fox calling Trump “stupid” and a “false prophet.” He also mocked the real estate tycoon for eating a taco bowl on Cinco de Mayo, saying Trump “is going to get indigestion. That’s not Mexican food.”
The reaction on social media questioned just how effective Fox might be, with or without Pelosi’s help, in persuading people not to vote for Trump… here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
