Conspiracy-minded people did their best to link two unrelated deaths in Flint, Michigan to a supposed government “coverup.”
Matthew McFarland, who was a foreman at the water treatment plant in Flint, was found dead in his home by a friend on April 16, according to MLive.
The 43-year-old died “suddenly” according to his obituary. Authorities said foul play was not suspected, though his autopsy has not been released.
McFarland had previously been interviewed by authorities in regards to the water crisis, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette’s office told MLive.
Days before McFarland’s death a 19-year-old mother, also involved with the water scandal, Sasha Avonna Bell, was killed in a double homicide with another female, Sacorya Renee Reed.
Bell was one of the first to file a lawsuit over the infected water.
Police named Bell’s ex-boyfriend, 18-year-old Malek Emmanuel Thornton, as the suspected killer.
Although conspiracy websites like Natural News rushed to call the deaths part of a government “coverup,” authorities quickly downplayed the notion.
“Nothing in the investigation indicates that was the case whatsoever,” Flint Police Capt. Leigh Golden told the New York Daily News.
Golden said there had been an “ongoing feud” between Bell and Thornton before the murders occurred.
“It had nothing to do with the water suit,” he added.
That didn’t stop conspiracy theorists on social media, including comedian D.L. Hughley, from questioning if the deaths were part of a government conspiracy.
