If anything is clear in an election cycle being dominated by Donald Trump, a businessman with no political experience, it is that the American people are fed up with both political parties.
A new poll shows that the Republican Party’s popularity has dropped to a 24-year low. And even more troubling for the party, much of that dissatisfaction is coming from Republican voters.
According to the Pew Research Center:
The Republican Party’s image, already quite negative, has slipped since last fall. Currently 33% of the public has a favorable impression of the Republican Party, while 62% have an unfavorable view. Unfavorable opinions of the GOP are now as high as at any point since 1992.
In October, 37% viewed the Republican Party favorably and 58% viewed it unfavorably. The decline in favorability since then has largely come among Republicans themselves: In the current survey, 68% of Republicans view their party positively, down from 79% last fall.
Putting things into perspective, MSNBC noted that the GOP was underwater by 15 points in early 2009 and have nearly doubled the gap since — though many on the right will point to Republican politician’s weak-kneed efforts to stand up to President Barack Obama as a contributing factor.
With Trump in the lead, the party is likely to continue experiencing internal strife.
Pulitzer Prize-winning conservative columnist George Will put out a piece on Friday saying if Trump is nominated, the GOP must keep him out of the White House.
To be fair, MSNBC pointed out that Democrats “aren’t winning any popularity contests” either, although their unfavorable rating is still much better than their GOP counterparts.
The Pew survey showed Democrats have a 45% favorability rating, compared to 50% of respondents who said they have an unfavorable opinion of the party.
But their woes are minuscule compared to the Republican Party.
The network was happy to share that the GOP “is underwater with women and men; whites, blacks, and Latinos; Americans of every age group; and voters of every level of education.”
That doesn’t leave very many folks to woo.
