Weakness invites mischief, and in this case, something even worse…
With President Barack Obama distracted with other things, North Korea sentenced a South Korean-born American citizen to 10 years of hard labor on Friday for allegedly spying.
North Korea’s state-run news agency reporting that the country’s Supreme Court found American Kim Dong Chul guilty of committing “offenses in a scheme to overthrow the socialist system of the DPRK,” according to CNN.
Not to worry though, State Department spokesman John Kirby told the network that “the welfare of U.S. citizens is one of the department’s highest priorities.”
“In cases where U.S. citizens are reported detained in North Korea, we work closely with the Swedish Embassy, which serves as the United States’ Protecting Power in North Korea,” Kirby said in an emailed statement. “We have no further comment due to privacy considerations.”
Kim is the second American this year to receive a harsh sentence from North Korea, with 21-year-old University of Virginia student Otto Frederick Warmbier receiving a sentence of 15 years of hard labor in March for allegedly removing a political banner from a Pyongyang hotel, CNN reported.
Yet, a weak-kneed President Obama remains missing in action.
While American citizens are being sentenced to harsh punishment they’ll be fortunate to survive and Russian jets continue to embarrass the U.S. military, the president is fast preparing for his final White House Correspondents Association Dinner.
The semi-retired president will set aside his role as commander-in-chief Saturday evening to deliver his “swan song as comedian in chief,” yukking it up with America’s media elite — also known as his allies.
In his final performance, Obama will display “his natural comic timing and pointed wit that are rare for any politician, let alone the head of state of the planet’s only superpower,” wrote The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove.
Unfortunately, that “pointed wit” doesn’t prevent bullies from kicking sand in his face.
